The LGBTQ+ Community and the Cannabis Movement: A Union for Good

The San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club

Opened in 1992 in response to the AIDS pandemic, the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club was the first medical cannabis dispensary in the United States. It was established by longtime cannabis user Dennis Peron after he saw how cannabis alleviated the pain suffered by his partner Jonathan West, who died from AIDS in 1990.

But the CBC was more than an alternative medicine dispensary. It was a place where plans were made, schemes hatched, campaigns launched, victories celebrated, defeats consoled… and cherished friends, family members, and lovers remembered and memorialized.

The club ceased physical operations years ago. Weedmaps and Equality Federation created this t-shirt to pay homage to the CBC. The cranes delivered prayers of healing to all who saw them. They hung on mobiles around the club, each one a prayer to a departed soul.

Learn from the past.

Join Weedmaps in supporting two organizations that advance LGBTQ+ rights. From schoolhouses to statehouses, they are making a difference.

The GLBT Historical Society collects, preserves, exhibits, and makes accessible to the public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of LGBTQ+ history, culture, and arts in all their diversity.

The Equality Federation is the strategic partner to state-based organizations advancing equity for LGBTQ people in the communities we call home. We believe in equality and justice for all.

We have partnered with the team behind InclusiveBase, who spent the last two years compiling a list of minority-owned businesses that conscious consumers can shop from. To help consumers who want to support Black-owned businesses, we are providing the retailers, deliveries, and brands that they have collated and are available on Weedmaps for you to shop from.

Below is information about the creators of the list, so you can support them too:

Cannaclusive was created to facilitate fair representation of minority cannabis consumers. At Cannaclusive, we celebrate the cultures of this thriving community through curated experiences and thoughtful content. We make it easier for brands to communicate with diverse audiences and ensure that minority consumers are not an afterthought, but a valued ally in the fight for legalization and destigmatization.

ALMOSTCONSULTING began as a cannabis marketing consultancy focused on harnessing digital communities and experiential activations to bring consumers and collaborators together. At ALMOSTCONSULTING, we work to break the stigma of woman-identifying cannabis consumers by bringing an unapologetic, fresh take on old marketing concepts. We believe in the power of transparency and accessibility for consumers of all levels to appreciate the cannabis plant and understand its potential benefits and applications.

Cannabis and compassion

From those who’ve been fighting from the start to those advocating for cannabis freedom today, we take a look back at lessons learned in California’s cannabis history and explore the path forward to safe, legal access for all patients and adults.

How cannabis can help America out of the opioid crisis

The Exit Drug documentary, created by Weedmaps, investigates how cannabis could play a major role in ending the opioid crisis, a public health emergency that kills an average of 115 U.S. citizens a day.

Defending Delivery

An estimated 15% of medical marijuana patients are mobility impaired. Weedmaps spent the day with Benny's Farm, Dr. Frank D'Ambrosio, and their medical cannabis patients to find out more about how delivery services are changing the lives of the people they serve.
